About St Albans
St Albans is a cathedral city in Hertfordshire, just east of Hemel Hempstead and west of Hatfield, north-west of London, south-west of Welwyn Garden City and south-east of Luton. St Albans was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north and became the city of Verulamium, the second-largest town in Roman Britain after Londinium, It is within the London commuter belt and the Greater London Built-up Area.
On 1 April 1974, St Albans became part of the new, larger St Albans City and District. City status was transferred to the entire district in 9 July 1974. Local government services are now provided by Hertfordshire County Council and St Albans City and District Council. Eight local parish councils cover the parts of St Albans City and District.
